Spanish fan interviews Dave (November 12 2001)

1. I became a gigolo fan after listening "Minor chord and major themes", what happened in all the time that nothing was recorded since Flippin' out in 1994?
Dave Gibbs : Lots of boring record bussiness-type junk mainly. Plus some personnel changes in the band. We’re pretty slow when it comes to making new records! thankfully, our fans are pretty patient :)

2. A time ago we could see advert of Telefonica (a phone company) with "Girl from yesterday"...I think it's a great thing...do you think it's time to have success after 12 years?
DG : Well, we never got to see the ad, cause it was only in spain, but it’s nice to know people are hearing the song. Maybe it’ll put a little money in antonio vega’s pocket, and that’d be cool

3. there are films, tv shows, adverts with your music, isn't it right?
DG : We’ve had a bit of luck getting our songs in movies, and recently, we wrote a lot for the josie and the pussycats film. Go check it out!

4. "We have some problems with most really sentimental songs. And then we found ourselves making a record full of them!" Dave Gibbs says... do you really need to make sentimental songs to fill yourself and feel better?
DG : I have a hard time writing lyrics, so the only thing i can write about it myself. Steve is better at being able to write little stories into his songs

5. are there any band in Boston you appreciate? how is the scene there?
DG : Well, we live in los angeles now, so i’m not sure what’s going on in boston these days. I really like this guy named Bleu. Kinda like jellyfish meets queen

6. how is your relation with Mike Deneen? is he only a producer or also a good friend?
DG : he’s a great guy, and i’m sorry we don’t get to see him more often. Hopefully when we’re in boston over christmas, we can hang out.

7. tell us something about the new record...i hope i'll listen songs as incredible as «the big lie » or «c'mon c'mon »....
DG : the new record is a bit different from the last one, but i hope people will like it. It’s maybe a bit quieter in parts. Some of my favorite songs are the slower ones. Maybe i’m just getting old!

8. What about sniper & marauder?
DG : Those were the unfortunate names that steve and i had for our first bands. We loved kiss and aerosmith, so we wanted something tough sounding. Oh yeah, plus we were absolutely clueless!

9. when Sniper & Marauder existed, did you think that someday you would arrive where you are now?
DG : Not really. I’vealways wanted to be in a band and make music, but i’ve been pretty fortunate to be able to do it for a long time with my best friends.

10. originally you weren’t from Boston? why did you decide to live there?
DG : I guess we needed to move to a city, and boston didn’t seem as intimidating as NYC. Plus we liked a lot of bands from there, like the cavedogs, big dipper, pixies, blake babies…

11. i think that in boston, people loves you...
DG : thank you, i hope so too :)

12. don’t you thinkn it’s strange to release records for 3 different companies?
DG : Record companies are notoriously fickle, and our music is hard to sell, so i think they get tired of trying after awhile

13. What are the changes in the formation of gigolo aunts? why?
DG : Well, the band is always steve and me, then john and fred if they’re available, or sometimes phil hurley will help out, and my old roommate mark rivers will play drums. Kind of a revolving door. Everyone we’ve ever had in the band has been really cool, and an honor to play with.

well, here goes a short and bad test:
favourite band: beatles… no question about it
favourite meal: steak from the capitol grill in boston
favourite book: revolutionary road, by richard yates
favourite film: ordinary people
favourite city toured: i don’t really have any one particular favorite city
favourite band you have played with: probably big star at the filmore in san francisco
