"THE GIRL FROM YESTERDAY"
(Antonio Vega)

One day you don't even know what time it is
You lay by my side but still you don't know why
The empty streets have seen you grow and change
But I know in your heart you might be crying again

I look out of the window for the girl I knew yesterday
Smiling in the flowers of my favorite garden
Too hard to understand too late to comprehend
While you and I can never be together again

The early morning light that slowly fills the room
Makes your golden hair shine like the sun
And late up in Penta I'm still listening to
Every song that ever made me fall for you..fell for you

I look out of the window for the girl I knew yesterday
So hard to understand there's nothing I can do
Now I'm going out of my mind following you
Going out of my mind following you...

Original version from Nacha Pop:

"LA CHICA DE AYER"

Un día cualquiera no sabes que hora es
Te acuestas a mi lado sin saber por que
Las calles mojadas te han visto crecer
Y tú en tu corazón estás llorando otra vez

Me asomo a la ventana eres la chica de ayer
Jugando con las flores en mi jardín
Demasiado tarde para comprender
Chica vete a tu casa no podemos jugar

Track info: A spanish classic introduced to us by our friend the Breadface. We heard the song, liked it and attempted to put our own spin on it. With a little help from Bob Susnjara from the Pyramidiacs we translated the lyrics so they sound almost like English, and later that day, we recorded it in Madrid with the ever-handsome Ricardo. We barely knew the song when we stumbled through it live at Benicassim '99 (I remember staring at Dave's hands for the chord changes). The audience loved it though, and the rest is history. -Steve Hurley-

The original version from the eighties by Nacha Pop makes reference to local clubs in Madrid. A few years after the death of the Spanish dictator Franco, Spain finally became free and this led to a new scene that lasted for at least a decade. It was so important that even till today, Madrid is one of the most famed cities for nightlife in the world. The Penta was the first (or the second) real club with live music from the new Madrid band scene. The group Nacha Pop originated from this scene and were at a daily basis in Penta, either playing or listening to other bands. The band broke up and one of the 2 main members continued a solo career : Antonio Vega. The song has gotten a come-back in Spain with the Gigolo Aunts version. It has been recently used for a local commercial and it has made everyone wonder who the Gigolo Aunts are. - Thanks to Marc from Madrid for the missing words and the song's story!

"KAY AND MICHAEL"
(Gibbs/Hurley)

Track info: This number was a staple of our live set for a good year or two. The original version featured Dave getting out all of his frustrations in the lyrics (there was even an anti-Oasis lyric that we cut when we started to kind of like them). We recorded this song a few times, but this one has the best vibe, along with jon's out of tune, rock'n'roll piano. -Steve Hurley-

"THE SHIFT TO SUPEROVERDRIVE"
(Gibbs/Hurley)

Track info: I always liked this one because it rocked, but we rarely played it live. I knew when I wrote it that we already had "Super Ultra" and there didn't seem to be room for two "super" numbers. i just couldn't help myself. -Steve Hurley-

"TO WHOEVER"
(Gibbs/Hurley)

Track info: Someone kept calling my house and hanging up, so I got out my frustrations by writing this. This one was a big live number for a long time. The end really rocks. Adams Duritz really wanted us to include this song on "Minor Chords", but we weren't sure that it fit the vibe. Who knows, he may well have been right? -Steve Hurley-

"SULK WITH ME"
(Gibbs/Hurley)

Track info: This is the first song Fred ever played with us. We recorded it several different times, but this version has the best energy. A different version (featuring Jon's "Middle Earth" guitar solo) was actually slated to be on "Minor Chords" until Dave came up with "The Big Lie" and knocked this one back down to Triple A Pawtucket. -Steve Hurley-

"HEY LUCKY"
(Gibbs/Hurley)

Track info: I originally wrote this one for my cat, Bucky. He seemed to like it pretty well, but cats just don't buy records. Recording this was great fun. I remember we were late for the Boston Music Awards, so Dave got his vocal pretty quickly and Jon recorded the weird guitar solo in one take. -Steve Hurley-

"KINDA GIRL"
(Shear/Gibbs/Hurley)

She's just the kind of girl who thinks her life's a play
She'll quote the script all night then re-write it all day
Just when you start to think you understand the plot
She's twisting scenes around, and getting actions caught

She's a kinda girl
She's a kinda girl
She's a kinda girl
Like a nightmare is a kinda dream

She's like a movie that you stare at late at night
Her lips are moving but the words won't synch up right
Just when she screams she can't take another hour
She's singing in the hallway and dancing in the shower

She's a kinda girl
She's a kinda girl
She's a kinda girl
Like a nightmare is a kinda dream

Eventually.....You'll wake up with a start
Eventually.....You'll recognize all around
The pieces of the lives she blew apart

She's just the kind of girl who will always keep you thin
You open up your mouth but you won't get a straight word in
She's on the phone for hours when you'd rather get some sleep
Then pretends she doesn't know you when you see her in the street

She's a kinda girl
Like a nightmare is a kinda dream

Track info: Dave and I wrote this one with songwriting legend Jules Shear. Jules had this chorus and a riff that sounded kind of like Nirvana. Somehow Dave rearranged the riff to sound more like the Stones. I re-wrote most of the lyrics because Jules lyric's were too damn mean. No women is that bad ! Dave and I wrote the bridge. We recorded this one quickly on 8 track in Darron Burke's loft in Boston, which he shared with a bunch of bicycle couriers and their rather ripe stench. -Steve Hurley-

"WISHING YOU THE WORST"
(Gibbs/Hurley)

Here's wishing you the worst of luck
I don't think this will take too long
I thought we were the best of friends - I was wrong
Here's wishing you a rainy day and get swept by a hurricane
Hope the wind will blow you back to where you came

You were catchy like a virus
There was no place I could hide
But now you feel more like a tumor
Cause you grew and grew inside

You were catchy like a virus
There was no place I could hide
But now you feel more like a tumor
Cause you grew and grew inside

Here's wishing you the worst of luck
What more is that I can say
Wish you said so sweetly once just like decay

So let me raise a toast before I lose my nerve
Let me be the first - here's wishing you the worst
Cause you know you're gonna get what you deserve

Track info: Dave called me up and said "I've got this neat little ditty called "Wishing You The Best", but it would be funnier to call it "Wishing You The Worst"". "Hmm", I said. "Let me think about it". I delved inside and thought about someone I was really mad at. Next thing I knew I had written a page full of lyrics. I brought them over to Dave's and voila!!! -Steve Hurley-

"SWAY"
(Gibbs/Hurley)

Half-past nine - every thought was a sign
That perhaps I'd be better off in bed
Half-past ten - I was at it again
Swilling coffee till my blue light soul turned red

Now is the time to leave that all behind
To leave that all behind and just sway

Half-past 12 - I was deep in a delve(?)
I was begging the catch for advice
Half-past 1 - I was coming undone
Cause the phone line it hung up on me twice

Now is the time to leave that all behind
To leave that all behind and just sway
Now is the time to leave that all behind
To leave that all behind and just take a breath and sway
Sway!

Half-past 4 - found me flat on the floor
Watching the shadows retreat
Half-past 5 - are you moved from outside(?)
Cause the twilight suggests it will be

Now is the time to leave that all behind
To leave that all behind and just sway
Now is the time to leave that all behind
To leave that all behind and just take a breath and sway
Sway!

Track info: We recorded this with our friend Brian Charles the same day we recorded "To Whoever". I remember that Jon borrowed a Gretch White Falcon for the sessions and it sounded great. Another live staple. The pause at the end was longer or shorter depending on Fred's artistic temperament. -Steve Hurley-

"SLOE"
(Gibbs/Hurley)

Something's I've seen places I've been
Break me down can I just see them again
Dumb things I've done when I was young
I couldn't wait for my life to begin
My life to begin

I took for granted all I was handed
I never thought that the handing would stop
Where does it say that I saw her day
I picked it up and just I threw it away
Threw it away
I threw it away - I threw it away

Threw it away - Just threw it away

Track info: This is a song Dave wrote originally called "Slow Grunge". We demoed it several ways and with time it got less and less grungy and more and more pretty. A freaky hippie chick by the name of Jennifer Abel played viola on it and it came out great. We recorded all those viola tracks with multiple 8-track bounces. Those strings really make the number in my humble opinion. -Steve Hurley-

"ROCKING CHAIR"
(Gibbs/Hurley)

Swing low, swing low, swing low
Oh darling don't you slow, darling don't you
Swing well, swing well, swing well
Oh coming for a spell, coming for a
Coming for a spell - coming for a - coming for a...

Spell, right on your shell
Coming in your tails
In my rocking - in my rocking - in my rocking chair
Rocking chair - rocking...

Swing wide, swing wide, swing wide
Oh darling don't you hide, darling don't you
Swing soon, swing soon, swing soon
Oh coming for a moon, coming for a
Coming for a moon, coming for a - coming for a - coming for a...

Moon, from your cocoon
Coming in your tails
In my rocking - in my rocking - in my rocking chair
Rocking chair - rocking...

Chair...

Swing by, swing by, swing by
Oh coming for a drive, coming for a
Oh coming for a drive, coming for a - coming for a - coming for a

Drive, say goodbye!
Coming for a spell, light up your shell
Coming for a moon, from your cocoon
Coming in your tails
In my rocking - in my rocking - in my rocking chair
Rocking chair - rocking chair!

Track info: This song was attempt by me to write something more upbeat both musically and lyrically. We were all going through various personal and financial disasters at the time, so the material had gotten pretty dour. Sometimes when I hear this one I think it's really original and great, other times I think maybe not. -Steve Hurley-

"THE SUN WILL RISE AGAIN"
(Gibbs/Hurley)

Give it to me slow when my spirit's low
Give it to me slow when I'm low
Give it to me nice when my hands are ice
Give it to me nice when I'm ice

Cause I've been here before and I know that I'm sure
That I think I am sure that I know

That the sun will rise again - the sun will rise again
The sun will rise and fill the skies again

Give it to me sweet when my soles are beat
Give it to me sweet when I'm beat
Give it to me light when my color's tight
Give it to me light when I'm tight
Cause I've been here before and I know that I'm sure
That I think I am sure that I know

That the sun will rise again - the sun will rise again
The sun will rise and fill the skies again
Fill the skies again
The sun will rise again

Track info: We recorded this one with at same studio as "Flippin' Out" and "Minor Chords" with talented pals Jon Lupfer and Charlton Pettus. Originally the whole song rocked out like the opening riff, but it sounded so nice acoustically that we just melded the two approaches together. Mostly I remember doing my trademark wimpy lead vocal and then leaving to get something to eat. When I came back, Dave had laid a bunch of gorgeous harmonies on top, and the song really came to life. -Steve Hurley-
