After a five-year recording hiatus largely due to contractual red tape, Boston's Gigolo Aunts have returned with Minor Chords..., a winning collection of silky, affable rock songs that use strong composites of vocal harmonies and twin-guitar interplay to lasting effect. Despite their aesthetic simplicity, songs like "The Big Lie," "Simple Things" and the cloying "Everyone Can Fly" are well-calculated gems, written to remind you that power-pop doesn't need to be sophisticated to be effective. Recorded for Counting Crow Adam Duritz's label, Minor Chords' guitar strums, traces of distortion and well-placed counter melodies are sewn together effortlessly by producer Mike Denneen. The album's overall lushness and its ripened bevy of hooks congeal into a steady stream of elegant, hummable melodies.
